Abstract

The rapid development of information technology has significantly transformed the way people think and engage with literacy in modern society. Amid the fast-paced and superficial flow of information, the phenomenon of "brain rot" has emerged, describing a decline in intellectual capacity due to the excessive and low-quality consumption of digital content. This study aims to explore Al-‘Alaq verse 1 (Iqra’) through a contemporary tafsir (interpretation) approach as a Qur’anic response to this intellectual crisis. The verse serves not only as a command to read but also as a transcendent call to cultivate a deep, reflective, and meaningful literacy culture. This research employs library research and interviews, adopting a thematic tafsir method and contextual hermeneutic approach. The findings reveal that a renewed interpretation of Iqra’ can provide a spiritual and intellectual foundation for addressing the challenges of the digital era. Contemporary exegesis highlights that reading is not merely a cognitive activity, but also a process of self-transformation toward becoming more critical and knowledgeable individuals. Thus, this verse is highly relevant in reigniting literacy awareness amidst the intellectual decline threatening today’s generation.
